The hypocrisy of the hypocrites

The hypocrisy of the hypocrites makes me hurl.

The ignorance and the negligence of the honesty of the simple leaves me amazed.

The world is weird and weirder are the people who constitute the world.

Truth and honesty are no longer welcome, neither are sincere relationships and genuine emotions.

It is instead the world of deceit, malicious gossip, back-stabbing and arm-twisting.

The spineless aspires to rule by preying on the dumb and fooling the smart. It remains to be seen who emerges victories.

Then again is this even a fight? Forget world peace. Is peace amongst "friends" even possible? Can I trust the person who is friend not to smile and back-stab while under the impression that the stab hurts without me knowing? Talk about being ambitious...

The Year That Was 2008

The year began different as she had deferred her semester. She enjoyed working life as she interned at a Financial PR firm. The internship whizzed by and soon came her 22nd birthday. She celebrated like the kid she always became on 14th Feb. Dinner with friends and then partying the night away. The very next day she flew out to attend her cousin sister's wedding. It was all beautiful, it was lovely but it was all too rushed. It was time to celebrate and dance and sing but she was too sick. The wedding was soon over and back to the grind of Singapore it was.

It was time to return to SMU to begin the deferred accountancy term. That spelt misery with 3 core accounting subjects!! By then she had lost all faith in accountancy and had no fight left. She struggled and suffered through the term. Tax planning was her nightmare. In the end she scrapped through, barely though. The summer holidays came late but came with a bang! She finally secured a BSM and got accepted into for summer exchange. Summer promised to be the best of her life to date.

The day after her last exam she was off to Sweden and Denmark for the BSM. The travelling was exhilarating and amazing. The sights, sounds and tastes awed her. As she soaked in the wonders of Scandinavia it was time to head back to sunny Singapore. Just 8 days later she was off again. This time to Mumbai for 10days on her way to London for her summer school at The London School of Economics and Political Science. The 10days flew by, she was happy and free and very much busy. Before she realised she was back on a plane, flying off to London. She was excited, she was nervous. Alone in a foreign land.. She wondered how she will survive.

London welcomed with open arms and with soon she was totally immersed in her London life. Making new friends and discovering a new life. She was happy and truly content. Studying hard and partying even harder, she ventured into new places. Edinburgh in Scotland, Cardiff in Wales and Paris in France made her summer all the more enchanting. She was living a dream and she didn't want to wake up. Unfortunately all good things come to an end and so did her summer in London. She was soon saying alvida and was on her way back to Singapore. However a 1 day stop in Mumbai was awaiting and she was most looking forward to it. That one day passed to fast, in a haze. It was a tearful separation of indefinite period. With teary eyes and heavy heart she boarded the plane and flew far away.

Starting year 4 felt different yet the same. It started at a feverish pace of job applications and career talks. The interview calls came and she saw hope. She gave her all, impressed and prayed for the best. The future looked bright and she was all smiles. Then came the global economy crash which faded the future and blurred the present. The interviews stopped, the progress halted and she was even shown the door. She was in shock at the complete turn of events. Who can predict the game of God? She smiled and marched ahead. She went through classes and felt the emptiness in life. She left foreign in her own life. People seemed changed or maybe it was just her. She yearned for something to fill the void. Joining painting class she found some solace. Yet she longed to escape Singapore again. She wondered what the holidays would bring and if she would get to spread her wings. She longed for that touch, those arms and that love. The distance was hard to bear and she struggled each day, the smile never leaving her face. Her pain was hers and his alone.

December loomed ahead and she was invited to a friend's wedding. How exciting she thought.. But her parents refused. Then came Chakra like a knight in shining armour. Glad to be rescued she accepted Chakra and embarked on another journey. 2 weeks in a village living the simple life. No electricity, limited water, sleeping on the floor, cooking own food, doing carpentry and teaching kids. That was her life and she learnt a lot. She fell, she cried, she laughed, she smiled. She was glad she went; she came out a better person. Then came the trip to Goa; a holiday finally. For 3 days she relaxed and enjoyed on the sand and in the sea. She left sunburnt but happy, looking forward to a wonderful wedding. The wedding was great, she felt overwhelmed. Her friend was married, would it be her turn soon? She was happy and content with life. A few bonus days to spend in Mumbai. She seized each day and made it fun. Living her life and making memories. Then came time to say good-bye again. She cried and she cried and cried some more. Good-bye was too hard, too painful and heartbreaking; indefinite separation again looming ahead. Promises were made to strive hard for progress. Promises were made of undying love. Promises were made to meet again. Promises were made to keep the promises...

The year that was 2008 was amazing. Full of ups and downs like any other year. What 2009 holds is to be seen. Pray for the best, prepare for the worst cause life is a beautiful journey; unique for each.

The accounting 'hell' I got myself into

I am a student of Accounting. But the fact remains that I do not enjoy this field of study. This is the very reason why I choose my 2nd major of Corporate Communication. Corporate Communication is as far removed from Accounting as ever. It is also a field of study I thoroughly enjoy.

As if being forced to study Accountancy is not torture enough, someone brilliantly decided to have all the Accountancy classes at 8.30am in the morning. Each class also has a minimum 50% weightage exam together with disastrous project requirements. Most of the times the projects aren’t even useful and demand insane amounts of time and resources.

The professors too have sworn to be the most boring, monotonous, cynical, evil and vindictive of the lot. The students are no better. They are vicious with their excessive competitiveness and fire to excel regardless of whom they have to remove from their path of success. This deadly combination makes the faculty most unfriendly in general. It also brings about an atmosphere of hostility and Darwinian style fight of survival.

It’s quite obvious I do not have the most raving of views of my faculty peers. As expected of all my friends a bare minimum are from the Accountancy faculty.

It is then a pity that I am expected to sit through 3, 3 hours advanced accounting classes at 8.30am on each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Most times I have no interest or initiative to follow the lesson. It is at these times that I wonder if I could use this time instead for something more worthy. Especially since I can survive the course without listening to a single word during the class and studying on my own.

It is then depressing to think I have 3 more accounting modules left before graduation. I sincerely wish I had not chosen Bachelor of Accountancy for my degree and gotten myself into this hell.

I love to dress

Those people who know me would know that i am a big believer in the power of dressing. Simply put I love to be well dressed, all the time. Now when I say well dressed, I do not mean being in formal clothes, expensive cloths, branded clothes and the likes. My personal dressing mantra is simple, I like to dress to look good.

Actually I can "blame" my mother for my dressing sense. Ever since I was a toddler, my mother used to dress me in frocks, matching socks and shoes. Hair neatly combed and tied/ clipped back. I guess the proper dressing got to me since then. You know even today I must have my shoes matching with (or more realistically complimenting) my outfit. Even my earrings have to match my clothes.

Like I said earlier, I love to experiment with my clothes. Basically my variety of clothes is very wide. I have things from 5-6 yrs old together with my latest purchases in my cupboards. I am not into brands or even specific shops. I am a self-proclaimed opportunistic shopper. When I see something I absolutely love, I get it. (the price being right that is). As I've said in an earlier post, i have tops bought for $2!! So yea for me anything goes as long as I love it.

Basically I have a habit of deciding my entire outfit the night before. So I literally raid my closet every night, trying to find something comfortable, stylish and flattering. I then raid my shoe collection for that "perfect" pair of footwear. I also look through my earrings for the right pair. Lay everything out and simply put it all together in the morning.

Now I'll be lying if I say i don't wear any make up. My staple make up is very simple. Eyebrow pencil, lipstick/ lipgloss and the most important eyeliner! Special occasions have special requirements!

At the end of the day, the person you are depends on your personality and character, clothes are simply the packaging. Remember you only get one chance to make the first impression!

Primary school days...

I've been through kindergarden, primary school, secondary school and junior college. Now i am in university. If asked when i had the best time, it will be a tie between primary school and university.
So now you'll want to ask me why these two? I'll touch upon university in a later post. For this one i'll just tell about my primary school days.

It has been 8 long years since i completed my PSLE but i still remember my primary school days very well. I used to study in Xinghua primary school. It was a neighbourhood school a stone's throw away from my house. I joined it only in primary 2 when my family shifted house. Of course joining in primary 2 meant I had missed out one year to make friends. I can clearly remember the first day of school. I had gone through the lessons before recess. One of those lessons was mother tongue. Now I didn't take any mother tongue offered in school. I was a non- Tamil Indian language student doing Hindi. But I was required by school to sit in the Tamil class during the mother tongue lesson. So back to recess. I was sitting alone in the canteen, eating my packed food. A girl from the Tamil class, Sivarangani, came up to me and started talking. I think that was the first and last time I was ever alone in school. Rangani soon introduced me to all the Indian kids in her "gang". There were quite a few of them. All took Tamil, and I used to sit in their lesson. So very soon I joined their gang which meant eating together during recess, playing hopscotch together (a very popular sport in my school), talking in class and basically being friends. Of the gang, 2 guys were in my primary 2 class, Vinod and Kalai.

When i went to primary 3, another NTIL student was in my class. She was a quiet girl with bambi eyes. Her name was Preeti. So she joined the gang too. With her we had the original 4; Vinod, Kalai, Preeti and me. We used to chit chat, fight (those trivial fights u laugh about now) and of course play hopscotch together. In the meantime Preeti and my friendship began to grow stronger. It was no time before she was at my house every other day, or i at her. We did every project together. We sat together in class. We did our prefect duties together. We even bunked school together. Basically we were "ask for one, get the other free".

The cool thing was the original 4 stayed in the same class in primary 4, 5 and 6. We went through hilarious childish moments together; we went for our excursions together. The gang was still there. But the 4 of us were in one class and the others spread out or not so close. All this while Preeti and I still sat in the Tamil class during mother tongue. We used to sit in the back and talk and laugh, occasionally doing some Hindi work.

Primary school was fun and each day was great. But little were we to know that in primary 4 this fun was going to be increased!!! In primary 4 we got a new Tamil teacher, Miss Parames (now Mrs Parames). Man she is the best teacher i have ever had (of course technically she never taught me...)!! She was full of fun. She was a friend to us. She was an aunt agony to us. We used to visit her in the staff room when we were bored, free or had a problem. She used to give the best children's day gifts to us. She even took us bowling and for lunch (her treat) in primary 6. She knew us, she knew our parents and she even knew our siblings. Haha she was one crazy teacher. In fact she is one of the few teachers i am still in touch with. I even went for her wedding.

So yea I had a great time in primary school!! Such a great time that i cannot forget those friends or teachers. Actually I haven't. I'm still in touch with most of the gang and Mrs Parames. On Saturday we had a gang reunion for the first time in the last 8 years. Unfortunately a few of the gang couldn't meet up. So eventually it was the original 4 and Mrs Parames.

But oh my god what a fun time we had!!!!!!!!!!!!! We laughed so much, our stomachs hurt.. And as usual Mrs Parames insisted on treating us. But seriously I have not had such a good time for quite some time. I had a blast. And Mrs Parames is as crazy as ever. Infact i think she has become crazier!! (if that is even possible...) I am certainly going to try to get the full gang together now. I even with just the 5 of us, we had such a great time. With the whole gang it'll be wild!
