Review of Michael Winterbottom's Trishna trailer

Trishna is Michael Winterbottom's latest cinematic offering and his third film adaptation of a Thomas Hardy novel, Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Trishna stars Freida Pinto and Riz Ahmed with original music by Amit Trivedi, and is set in contemporary Rajasthan.

According to Trishna's official Facebook page, "The movie tells the story of Trishna (Freida Pinto) who meets a weathly young British businessman, Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed), who has come to India to work in his father's hotel business. After an accident destroys her father's Jeep, Trishna goes to work for Jay and they fall in love. But despite their feelings for each other, they cannot escape the conflicting pressures of a rural society which is changing rapidly through industrialisation, urbanisation and, above all, education. Trishna's tragedy is that she is torn between the traditions of her family life and the dreams and ambitions that her education has given her."

The trailer for the movie is beautiful, with the music haunting you long after the trailer ends. I can’t wait to hear all the songs of the movie - hoping for another magical album by Amit Trivedi. It is also refreshing to see "modern" Rajasthan in the trailer rather than just the typical scenes of deserts, villagers and camels usually shown.

Riding high on her success in Hollywood, Freida Pinto returns to play an out and out Indian part as a young woman from Rajasthan – also a refreshing change. Of course will have to watch the movie to decide whether she embodies her Indian character as well as she does her Hollywood characters.

tum..

tumko deekh kar saas chalti hai
tumko chukar zindagi lagti hai
tumko sunkar khushi hoti hai
tumko pakar jannat milti hai
lekin woh jannat kis kaaam, jab tum saath na ho

Straight from the heart

hume jinse pyaar hai
jinke liye humari jaan hai,

unse he humari pehchan hai
unke bina hum kya hai,

shayaad humne kabhi keha nahi
lekin unke bina jeena nahi,

hume hum se zyaada jaana
duniya se zyaada chaahna,

yehi unka kaam hai
aur yehi unki pehchan hai,

hume jinse pyaar hai
unka humpe bahut ehsaan hai

Sardi ke us shaam

sardi ke us shaam jab unpe nazar padi,
hum bhol gaye ke yeh sapna tha ya hakikat thi.
jadoo kuch aisa tha unki aadao ka,

hume abhi tak nahi pata unki adaaein mujhe ghayal kar gayi

on that winter evening, when i my eyes fell on him,
i forgot if it was a dream or reality
the magic of his mannerisms was such,
that i still do not know that his mannerisms wounded me

Attempt at shairi

I was sitting in the office waiting for my computer to be made available to me to start work. So i closed my eyes and got inspired (that is what I would like to think at least). And the following shayries are the results of that inspiration.

Woh aaya ghoode pe sawar,
pyar ka toufa leke
Woh aaya ghoode pe sawar,
pyar ka toufa leke
Dil to churaya he,
aapna toufa bhi vapass legaye
(he came riding a horse, with the gift of love,
he came riding a horse, with the gift of love
however although he stole my heart,
he took back his gift of love)

Hamara dil toodke aapko kya mila,
Dil to aapka he tha,
Aur aapne he tood diya
(what did you get from breaking my heart,
my heart was already yours,
and you only broke it)

Dushmano se to zakham milte he the
Dushmano se to zakham milte he the,
Magar apno ne bhi jab zakham diye,
Dil toota to toota,
Aaso bhi sookh gaye
(i used to get hurt by the enemies,
i used to get hurt by the enemies,
but when my own hurt me,
the heart did indeed break,
but the tears dried up as well)

Aapse kya shikayat kare,
shikayat to apno se karte hai,
Aapse kya shikayat kare
shikayat to apno se karte hai,
Magar jab apno ne he dhoka diya,
Hum shikayat kise kare
(how can i complain to you,
i only complain to ones close to me
how can i complain to you,
i only complain to ones close to me
but when the ones close betray,
whom do i complain to?)

Ok so they weren't all sad. The next one is kinda optimistic.

Pyar ki talaash mein hum kabhi yahan kabhi wahan gaye,
Magar jisko dhoondte hai woh na yahan na wahan hai.
Pyar ki talaash mein hum kabhi yahan kabhi wahan gaye,
Magar jisko dhoonte hai woh na yahan na wahan hai.
Jis din woh mil jaye,
hum yahan wahan ka rastha he bhool jaye
(i went here and there in search of love,
but the one who i was looking for did not come here or there
i went here and there in search of love,
but the one who i was looking for did not come here or there
the day i find him,
i will forget the route to here and there)

hmm so yea that was my attempt at shayri..
